The Indian Government would erect one Station on or near the West coast and the South African Government one in the neighbourhood of Pretoria. The Australian Government had undertaken to erect a Station to communicate with Singapore. Later it was contemplated that a Station should be erected at Hongkong and possibly in West Africa. Each Government would pay for the maintenance of the Stations it erected and would be credited with the receipt of the traffic which its own Station handled. The receipts would not be pooled. The revenue would be divided on the same principle as the through telegraphic revenue was divided between the various countri-
-es. The sum to be spent by the British Government, which would probably amount from first to last to £320,000, would be financed from the Post Office Vote, but the amount would be charged with interest and sinking fund under the Comercial Accounts published by the Post Office An ually".
The Postmaster-General then, dealing with the question of cost and remuneration, went onto say "that it was
expected that they would be able to effect a considerable reduction
in the rates of communication".
The abave announcement of the Postmas ter-General
pointing, as it did, to the establishment of a long-distance wire-
-less Station in this Colony, which would be the means of reducing
the high telegraph rates charged by the Cable Companies in this Colony was naturally received by us with considerable satisfaction, but we regret that the word "later" occurring in the Postmaster- -General's speech would seem to indicate that the erection of our
high-power Station here is likely to be postponed, and we would, therefore, venture to most respectfully urge that such postponement should not take place, but that the long-distance Station should be erected and completed in this Colony at the same time as in the sister Colony of the Straits Settlements, in order that the chain of communication between England and Hongkong may be completed as soon as the Ching from England to Singapore.
Such a long-distance Station would also enable us to
communicate notwithstanding the difficult nature of the intervening
country
